Right next to Paris, Seine-Saint-Denis is among the least served départements in France

Few contrasts in French dentistry are sharper. Paris has the highest density in the country, while Seine-Saint-Denis, immediately to its north-east, has just 28 general dentists in private practice per 100,000 residents, about half the national ratio of 55. Only a handful of départements are thinner on the ground. Across Saint-Denis, Montreuil, Bobigny and Aubervilliers, 489 dentists provide private care, up from 458 five years earlier.

Average fees per full-time active practitioner reach €355,092, rank 21 of 101, +17 % against France and +18 % against Île-de-France. The make-up is the most distinctive in the region: €204,086 comes from work billed at the regulated tariff, the highest such amount in Île-de-France, against only €151,006 in dépassements, the extra fees charged above that tariff. Turnover here rests on reimbursed treatment far more than on freely priced prosthetics. Oddly, patient lists are no longer than elsewhere, at 775 distinct patients per dentist against 837 for France, so low density does not automatically mean bigger caseloads.

The youngest, most mixed-practice workforce in the region

Who the dentists are helps explain that. 37 % of general dentists in the département are under 35, the highest share in Île-de-France, and 21 % combine private work with a salaried post, almost four times the national rate (6 %). Fewer private hours naturally cap the number of patients one practice can see. The profession is also markedly more male, with 37 % women against 48 % nationwide, and 25 % are aged 60 or over. Over ten years the average has risen +26 % from €282,392 in 2015, in step with France. When assessing a local practice, turnover per chair and the split between routine care and prosthetics say more than the headline total.

Specialists in Seine-Saint-Denis lag behind

Specialist care follows a different path. Orthodontics counts 29 practitioners qualified in orthopédie dento-faciale (ODF), down from 33 at the end of 2020, a density of 1.7 per 100,000 residents against 3.0 nationally. They average €617,692, −17 % on the national figure, with 899 patients each, and 35 % are 60 or older. At the other end, 14 % are under 35, the highest share of young orthodontists in the region. The 12 private stomatologists, doctors specialised in the mouth and jaw, average €318,491, the lowest of every published département for that specialty (rank 25 of 25), and 42 % of them also hold a salaried job.
