Paris: the most dentists per head, the smallest average per dentist
Paris counted 2,086 general dentists in private practice at the end of 2025, which works out at 102 per 100,000 residents. The national ratio is 55, and no other département comes close. Average fees per full-time active practitioner stand at €233,004, the lowest of all published départements (rank 101 of 101), −23 % against France and −22 % against the Île-de-France region. The patient base per chair tells the same story: 618 distinct patients a year per dentist, well short of the French figure of 837.
How those fees split is unusual too. Dépassements, the extra fees billed above the agreed national tariff (mostly on crowns, bridges and implants), average €116,849, roughly as much as the €116,155 billed at tariff. Across most of the country the regulated share clearly dominates. A Paris practice built on fillings, root canal work and check-ups therefore lands below a local mean that leans heavily on prosthetic work.
Ten flat years and an ageing workforce in the capital
The Paris average moved from €214,609 in 2015 to €233,004 in 2025 (+9 %), while the national one rose by +26 %. Headcount hardly changed over five years, with 2,053 at the end of 2020. Age is the other pressure point: 33 % of general dentists are 60 or older, against 19 % nationwide, and 23 % are under 35. Women make up 46 % of general dentists, slightly below the national balance. The city also hosts a dental school, and some of its graduates stay. The wave of retirements ahead will put many practices up for sale in the most competitive market in France, which bears on what a patient list is worth to a buyer.
19 % of Paris general dentists also hold a salaried post, against 6 % for France. Part of the low average probably reflects these reduced private hours; the calculator can strip that out by comparing fees per day spent in the chair.
Paris specialists also trail their national benchmarks
The 108 orthodontists (qualified in orthopédie dento-faciale, or ODF) average €500,983, −32 % on orthodontists nationwide, and see 720 patients each; 36 % combine private and salaried work, and their density of 5.3 per 100,000 residents is among the highest anywhere. Stomatologists, medical doctors specialised in the mouth and jaw, number 83, the densest concentration in the country, with an average of €407,761 and 59 % of them aged 60 or more. The ranking of départements sets each figure against the rest of France.
