Essonne: thin supply, yet an average that stays mid-table
On paper, the Essonne has what it takes for high fees. With 40 general dentists in private practice per 100,000 residents, it is one of the least supplied départements in Île-de-France, far below the national 55. Yet the average per full-time active practitioner is €329,145, rank 47 of 101 and +9 % on France. That beats the regional mean (+10 %), which Paris and the inner suburbs pull down, but lags well behind Seine-et-Marne and the Val-d'Oise, both with similar density.
The way dentists organise their week makes the difference. 16 % of Essonne general dentists combine private practice with a salaried job, around three times the French share of 6 % and nearly twice the rate in those two neighbours. Between Évry-Courcouronnes, Massy and the Saclay plateau, a sizeable group keeps part of the week for another employer, and private billing reflects it. Patient lists, at 811 distinct people a year, are also a touch under the national 837. Dépassements, the fees charged above the agreed national tariff, total €166,710, roughly matching the €162,435 billed at tariff.
A workforce that has hardly moved
There were 542 general dentists at the end of 2020 and 550 at the end of 2025, a marginal change while the Yvelines and Val-de-Marne grew markedly. Fees rose steadily, from €257,897 in 2015 to €281,069 in 2019, then +17 % by 2025. The age mix mirrors the country: 20 % aged 60 or over (19 % nationally), 30 % under 35, 45 % women. With few net arrivals and retirements at the national pace, a practice for sale in the rural south around Étampes faces different competition from one taken over in the built-up north of the département.
Specialists in the Essonne
The 34 orthodontists, qualified in orthopédie dento-faciale (ODF), bill €817,386 on average, +10 % against the national benchmark and rank 31 of 70. The specialty's average has climbed sharply since 2015 (+55 %). Women make up 71 % of them, 29 % are 60 or older and only 3 % under 35, so handovers are likely in the coming years. Each orthodontist treats 995 patients a year, below the French 1,166, and 24 % split their time with salaried work, a pattern that echoes the general dentists. The 9 private stomatologists, doctors who treat the mouth and jaw, average €409,903, and 56 % of them also work as salaried staff. The ranking of départements puts each of these averages in national context.
