Hauts-de-Seine general dentistry has been on a plateau since 2019

What sets the Hauts-de-Seine apart, just west of Paris, is the shape of its curve rather than its level. A full-time active general dentist billed €262,608 on average in 2019 and €268,700 in 2025, a rise of only +2 %, while the national average climbed +17 % over the same six years. That leaves the département at rank 91 of 101, −11 % on France and −10 % on the Île-de-France figure. Within the region only Paris has a lower average, and only Paris is more densely served.

Supply goes some way to explaining it. There are 1,037 general dentists in private practice, 62 per 100,000 residents against 55 nationally, up from 975 at the end of 2020. Each treats 739 distinct patients a year, below the French 837. From Nanterre to Boulogne-Billancourt, practices sit close together and share the same pool. Fees split almost evenly between €136,702 at the regulated tariff and €131,998 in dépassements, the extra fees charged above it.

One of the highest concentrations of orthodontists in France

The département has 90 orthodontists (specialists in orthopédie dento-faciale, ODF), or 5.4 per 100,000 residents where France averages about 3.0. They bill €648,499 on average, −13 % against orthodontists nationwide, with 892 patients each compared with 1,166 for the country. 78 % are women and 29 % also work in a salaried role. Of their fees, €490,520 are billed above tariff and €157,979 at it, a normal split for a specialty whose treatment plans are priced well above the reimbursement base. Only 4 % of these orthodontists are under 35, so new blood remains scarce. Their average has grown +29 % since 2015. The 17 private stomatologists, doctors specialised in oral and jaw care, average €460,764, but a group that small makes a shaky year-to-year benchmark.

Two generations sharing the market

The age profile has two distinct layers. 28 % of general dentists are under 35, yet 26 % are 60 or over, well above the national 19 %. Mixed practice, private work combined with a salaried job, involves 18 % of them, more than three times the French rate of 6 %, and women make up 51 % of the profession. In practice, long-established surgeries are coming up for sale while younger dentists, often part-time in private work, open nearby. An average blending both groups is a poor yardstick for a full-time practice; reading it alongside turnover per chair or actual days worked gives a fairer picture.
