Dentists’ fees in Rhône
1,269 general dentists in private practice, 74 orthodontists: their 2025 average fees, and yours alongside.
General dentists in Rhône (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) billed €281,898 in fees on average in 2025 per full-time active practitioner, 7 % below the national average (€302,480), which ranks the département 83 out of 101. Of that amount, €132,066 is extra fees (dépassements), the part charged above the national health insurance tariffs, mostly on crowns and other prosthetics: 47 % of fees, against 46 % across France. There are 66 general dentists per 100,000 residents (France: 55), and 16 % of them are aged 60 or over. The 74 orthodontists qualified in dentofacial orthopaedics (ODF) billed €908,956 on average, against €742,190 nationally. Between 2019 and 2025, general dentists’ average fees moved by +9.4 %. These are health insurance averages, not take-home pay: practice costs, roughly half of receipts, still come off, and non-reimbursable work such as implants is not included.

A crowded market where the average per dentist stays below the national mark
The Rhône has 1,269 general dentists in private practice, or 66 per 100,000 residents against 55 for France as a whole. Most of them work in and around Lyon, and that concentration drags the average down: €281,898 in fees per full-time active practitioner, −7 % on the French figure and −5 % on the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes one, which puts the département 83rd out of 101. Patients are not scarcer per chair: each dentist sees about 818 different people a year, close to the national 837. Demand is simply split between more practices.
The profession here is young. 36 % of general dentists are under 35 and only 16 % are 60 or over, against 19 % nationally, and headcount rose from 1,101 to 1,269 in five years. New practices rarely run at full capacity in their first years, and the steady flow of graduates from Lyon’s dental school keeps that effect going.
Mixed practice and orthodontics: what the single figure hides
8 % of Rhône general dentists combine private practice with salaried work, almost twice the French share (6 %). A dentist who spends a day or two a week at the hospital or in a health centre bills less privately, and the average absorbs it. If you practise in Lyon and your fees look low against the département, compare them per day actually spent in the chair: that is the “fees per day worked” line in the calculator.
Orthodontics runs the other way. The 74 specialists in dentofacial orthopaedics average €908,956 in fees, +22 % on the national orthodontist average, with 1,354 patients each. Extra fees make up most of that, as is normal for a specialty whose treatments are largely billed above the reimbursement base. An orthodontist setting up in Lyon should benchmark against the département, which sits well above the French figure, and expect a patient list far larger than a general dentist’s: treatment runs over months, so the same family returns through a long course of appointments.
One more reference point: 40 stomatologists (doctors specialised in the mouth and jaw) practise privately in the Rhône, with a published average of €690,787. For a group practice mixing general dentistry, orthodontics and oral surgery, compare each practitioner with their own specialty rather than the whole practice with one number; the ranking of départements gives the scale of each.
