Haute-Savoie: a crowded field and one of the lowest averages

Few French départements have as many dentists per head as Haute-Savoie: 68 general practitioners in private practice per 100,000 residents, where France as a whole has 55. The flip side shows up in the fees. A full-time active general dentist bills on average €253,658, a gap of −16 % with the national figure and −15 % with the regional one, which leaves the département 96th out of 101. Caseloads are smaller too, at 765 different patients per dentist each year against 837 nationally.

This is the profile of a place people move to. Headcount grew from 497 to 598 in five years (+20 %), spread between Annecy, the French side of the Geneva area, the Chablais on Lake Geneva and the Arve valley. Next door, Savoie and the Rhône are about as dense yet post higher averages, while the thinly served Loire and Haute-Loire lead the regional table.

Young dentists, almost all purely in private practice

The age structure is among the most youthful anywhere in France. Just 13 % of general dentists are 60 or older, compared with 19 % nationally, and 31 % are under 35. Recently opened practices seldom reach full speed straight away, so a young profession pulls the mean down on its own. Anyone hoping to buy a practice from a retiring owner will find few such sales in the near term. Women account for 49 % of general dentists, a little above the national 48 %, in a profession where the gender balance is now close to even.

Mixed practice, meaning private work combined with a salaried post, is effectively absent: 0 % of dentists here, against 5.5 % across France. The gap with the national average is not explained by time spent outside the surgery. Fees lean slightly towards care billed at the agreed tariff, €132,314, ahead of €121,344 in dépassements (extra fees above the tariff, chiefly on prosthetics). Over ten years the average is still up +22 % on its 2015 level.

Plenty of orthodontists, an outlier in stomatology

Orthodontics follows the same pattern. There are 40 specialists in dentofacial orthopaedics, up from 34, or 4.5 per 100,000 against 3.0 nationally, and their average of €656,947 is −11 % on the French orthodontic mean, with 959 patients each. Stomatology breaks the mould: its 6 private doctors average €835,775, 2nd of 25, though with so few practitioners that figure can swing sharply from year to year; the number of private stomatologists has also fallen from 9 to 6 in five years. The full ranking places each specialty in context.
