General dentistry in Isère tracks the French benchmark
Isère counts 704 general dentists in private practice, 53 per 100,000 residents, which is almost exactly the national density of 55. Average fees per full-time active practitioner come to €306,490, a gap of +1 % with France and +3 % with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. At 63rd of 101, the département sits in the broad middle of the table. Each dentist treats 849 different patients a year, close to the French 837.
The fee mix is split roughly in half: €151,397 billed at the agreed national tariff and €155,093 in dépassements, the extra fees charged above that tariff, mostly on crowns, bridges and dentures. Grenoble, the Voiron area, the north of the département facing Lyon and the Alpine valleys do not share one patient base, so the figure is a reference point rather than a target for any given surgery.
What really sets Isère apart is how rare mixed practice is. Only 1.4 % of general dentists combine their surgery with salaried work, against 5.5 % nationwide. The local average therefore describes full-time private dentists, which makes it a fairly clean yardstick for a conventional practice. The age profile is unremarkable: 20 % are 60 or older (19 % in France) and 30 % are under 35, so the flow of practices coming up for sale should stay at a normal pace.
Orthodontics: one of the highest averages in France
The specialty plays in another league. The 27 orthodontists (ODF, orthopédie dento-faciale, the French specialist qualification) average €1,292,944 in fees, +74 % against the national orthodontic figure and +40 % against the regional one. That ranks Isère 2nd out of 70 départements with published data. Each specialist follows 1,750 patients a year, far beyond the French 1,166, while density stays at 2.1 per 100,000, below the national 3.0.
Fewer orthodontists, each with a bigger caseload: that pairing goes a long way towards explaining the level. Headcount actually slipped from 30 to 27 over five years, and 26 % of the specialists are already 60 or over. The long series is telling too, flat between 2015 and 2019, then a sharp climb of +33 % by 2025. Benchmarks for the specialty are gathered on the orthodontist page.
Stomatology, the medical specialty of the mouth and jaw, is a small field here: 9 private practitioners, down from 13 five years earlier, averaging €456,455, which is −34 % against the regional figure for that specialty.
