Var: the middle ground between Marseille and the Riviera
Caught between two very different markets, Var lands in between. Its 837 general dentists in private practice, 73 per 100,000 residents, average €285,474 in fees per full-time active practitioner, which is −6 % against France and +2 % against the regional mean. That ranks the département 81 out of 101. Bouches-du-Rhône does better, Alpes-Maritimes clearly worse, and less crowded Vaucluse posts the highest average in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
€161,200 comes from treatment at the convention rate, the tariff agreed with the health insurer, and €124,274 from dépassements, the extra fees billed above it, mainly on prosthetics. Both are slightly below the national €164,450 and €138,030. Each dentist sees 734 different patients a year, against 837 in France, from Toulon to Fréjus by way of Hyères and Draguignan.
Five years of strong growth in Var
The département has added dentists quickly: 729 at the end of 2020, 837 at the end of 2025, a change of +15 %. 31 % of general dentists are under 35, a little above France (30 %), and 20 % are 60 or over, in line with the national 19 %. Mixed practice, private work alongside a salaried job, covers 5.1 % of dentists, close to the French 5.5 %. The local mean is neither inflated nor depressed by salaried time, which makes it a fairly direct yardstick for a full-time practice.
Newcomers have been sharing a demand that has itself expanded. Over ten years the average went from €226,848 in 2015 to €243,555 in 2019 and €285,474 in 2025, up +26 %, much the same pace as France (+26 %). Women account for 44 % of the profession, a little below the national 48 %.
Orthodontics and stomatology: one steady, one shrinking
Var's 45 orthodontists see about as many patients as the national norm, 1,131 each against 1,166, but bill less: €617,413 on average, −17 % relative to the specialty benchmark, at position 54 of 70. The gap lies in dépassements, €389,604 against €496,218 in France, more than in the tariff-based part (€227,809). 13 % of orthodontists also hold a salaried position.
Stomatology is the fragile segment. There are 10 stomatologists (doctors specialising in the mouth and jaw) in private practice, down from 15 at the end of 2020, and 50 % of them are 60 or older. Their published average of €355,977 sits −33 % against France. A shrinking, ageing group may foreshadow less private oral surgery capacity locally. The département ranking compares each specialty nationwide.
