Alpes-Maritimes: the densest supply and the thinnest patient lists

On the Riviera, competition between dental practices reaches a level almost no other département experiences. Alpes-Maritimes has 95 general dentists in private practice per 100,000 residents, +73 % on France, or 1,095 practitioners in all. Each one sees only 581 different patients a year on average, where the national figure is 837. Fees follow: €234,219 per full-time active practitioner, −23 % against the French mean and −16 % against the regional one, placing the département at position 100 of 101, at the very foot of the table.

Both components lag: €130,733 billed at the convention rate, the tariff agreed with the health insurer, and €103,486 in dépassements, the extra fees charged above it, mostly on prosthetics, compared with €164,450 and €138,030 nationally. The shortfall seems to come from the volume of treatment per practice across Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Menton rather than from pricing.

An older profile and shared working time

22 % of general dentists here are 60 or older, above the French 19 %, and 27 % are under 35, fewer than nationally (30 %). Dentists winding down towards retirement weigh on the mean, as do the 9 % who divide their week between private and salaried work (France: 6 %). Headcount has nonetheless kept rising, from 1,003 to 1,095 in five years, with Nice's dental school close by. Women make up 43 % of general dentists, fewer than the national 48 %. Fees have grown more slowly than in France as a whole: +24 % since 2015, against +26 % nationally.

For a purchase or a new practice, this cuts both ways. A low local average makes an established practice look strong by comparison, while the national benchmark sets a much higher bar. Reading a Nice practice against both figures, and then against turnover per dental chair, gives a fairer picture of where it stands.

Riviera orthodontics: record density, rock-bottom average

Orthodontics shows the same pattern. The 68 specialists in dentofacial orthopaedics (ODF, the French orthodontic qualification) amount to 5.9 per 100,000 residents, nearly twice the French 3.0. Their average of €420,595 is −43 % relative to the national benchmark, at position 69 of 70, with 655 patients per orthodontist against 1,166 in France. Dépassements, the share of treatment billed above the reimbursement base, account for 71 % of the total, and 21 % of orthodontists also hold a salaried post. Measuring a Riviera orthodontic practice against the French mean alone would misrepresent the local market.
