Pyrénées-Atlantiques: one of France's best-served départements
From the Basque coast to Béarn, the département counts 79 general dentists in private practice per 100,000 people, set against a French figure of 55. Very few départements are more densely served. Practices cluster along the shoreline from Bayonne and Biarritz down to Hendaye on the Spanish border, and around Pau. The result shows in each dentist's list: 721 distinct patients a year, well under the national 837. Fewer patients per chair means fewer procedures, and average fees land at €256,291, −15 % on France, in 95th place of 101.
Within Nouvelle-Aquitaine, only Gironde does worse; neighbouring Landes, slightly less crowded, sits a little higher. The gap with the regional average is −11 %. The pull of the ocean and the mountains on dentists choosing where to live may explain part of the density, though the data cannot measure it.
Private practice, full stop
Mixed practice, combining private work with a salaried post, barely exists here: 0.4 % of general dentists, against 6 % nationally. So the low average cannot be blamed on dentists spending part of the week in a hospital or health centre. The €256,291 figure describes full-time high-street practices, which makes it a fairly reliable yardstick for a local list. It breaks down into €137,810 at the agreed tariff and €118,481 in dépassements, the fees charged above that tariff.
The age profile is balanced towards youth: 27 % are under 35, 16 % are 60 or over, and numbers rose from 522 to 569 in five years. Few retirements are due soon, so competition for patients is unlikely to ease on its own. Over 2015 to 2025 the average rose by +21 %, most of it in recent years: between 2015 and 2019 the figure hardly moved, from €211,462 to €215,576, before reaching €256,291 in 2025. Women account for 53 % of general dentists, a little more than half.
Specialists trailing their national benchmarks
The 30 orthodontists average €535,891, −28 % on the French orthodontist mark, with 954 patients each. Their number has fallen from 34 five years ago and 30 % are 60 or older, so succession will become a live question sooner in orthodontics than in general practice. The 12 private stomatologists (medical doctors specialised in the mouth and jaw) average €340,913, ranked 23rd of 25. The orthodontist page sets out how the specialty's fees are built.
