Gironde sits near the very bottom of the general dentistry table
General dentists in Gironde bill €245,878 on average per full-time active practitioner, which ranks the département 98th of 101. That is −19 % against France and −14 % against the Nouvelle-Aquitaine average. The patient base is not the issue: each dentist treats 813 different people a year, roughly the national 837. Supply is. There are 1,179 general dentists in private practice, 68 per 100,000 residents where France has 55, one of the highest densities in the country.
The rest of the region looks very different. Rural inland départements such as Deux-Sèvres, Vienne or Creuse have far fewer dentists per head and much higher averages, while the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, also crowded, keep Gironde company at the low end. Bordeaux hosts a dental school, and the metropolitan area tends to hold on to its graduates, so practices multiply faster than demand grows.
A young workforce still building up its lists
Almost a third of Gironde's general dentists (31 %) are under 35, and only 15 % are 60 or older, below the French 19 %. Headcount went from 1,061 to 1,179 in five years. A newly opened practice takes years to fill its book, and the département average blends those early years with long-established surgeries. Fees have still moved up, from €191,805 in 2015 to €245,878 in 2025, a change of +28 %.
The split is the usual one: €140,635 billed at the agreed national tariff and €105,243 in dépassements, the extra fees charged above that tariff, mostly on crowns and bridges. When valuing a Bordeaux practice for purchase, the neighbourhood and the age of the list say more than the département figure; the département ranking puts that figure in national context.
Specialists: oral surgery on top, orthodontics crowded
Stomatology, the medical specialty of the mouth and jaw, stands out. 24 stomatologists practise privately here, up from 15 five years earlier, and their €723,441 average ranks 5th of 25, +37 % against the national reference. Orthodontics tells another story: 85 specialists, a density of 4.9 per 100,000 that is among the highest in France, and an average of €626,497, −16 % on the French orthodontist mark. The crowding seen in general practice repeats itself in the specialty, even though orthodontist numbers have eased slightly, from 90 five years ago, and each one still treats 1,066 patients a year. Stomatologists, for their part, see 1,385 patients each, well above the specialty's national 1,144.
