Pas-de-Calais: dentists who work almost entirely in private practice

Mixed practice is close to absent here. Just 2 % of the département's 658 private general dentists also hold a salaried job, compared with 6 % across France. The average of €337,817 per full-time active practitioner therefore describes people whose week is spent mostly at their own chair, which makes it a clean yardstick for a full-time practice. It runs +12 % against the French figure and +3 % against Hauts-de-France, placing the area 36th out of 101.

Volume does much of the work. A general dentist sees 984 different patients a year, against 837 nationally, while density stands at 45 per 100,000 residents, below the French 55. From the Opal Coast towns of Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais to the former mining belt around Lens and Béthune, and inland to Arras, fewer practices share the demand. The total splits into €193,458 billed at the tarif de convention, the nationally agreed tariff, and €144,359 in dépassements, the extra fees above it.

Midway between the Nord and the Aisne

Regionally the Pas-de-Calais sits in the middle. The neighbouring Nord, with more dentists per head, has a lower average; the Aisne, Oise and Somme, with fewer, have higher ones. The ranking tracks density almost one for one. Headcount grew from 595 to 658 in five years; 32 % of dentists are under 35 and 14 % are 60 or over, a younger profile than France as a whole (19 % aged 60+). The average itself moved from €258,355 in 2015 to €337,817 in 2025.

Orthodontics in the Pas-de-Calais: fewer specialists, longer patient lists

Orthodontics is heading the other way. Five years ago there were 40 private orthodontists; now there are 33, or 2 per 100,000 people against 3 nationally. Each one follows about 1,494 patients, far more than the French 1,166, and average fees reach €882,649, +19 % on the national orthodontist mean. Extra fees make up the bulk of it (€544,307), as is usual in the specialty.

With general dentistry expanding and orthodontics contracting, part of the demand for orthodontic treatment now falls on a shrinking number of specialist practices. Stomatologists are too few for the health insurance fund to publish an average. Further benchmarks are on the orthodontist page.

The orthodontists still in practice are on the young side: 18 % are 60 or over, compared with 24 % in the specialty nationwide, and 61 % are women. Their average fees went from €595,446 in 2015 to €882,649 in 2025, a rise of +48 % over the decade.
