Nord: the region's biggest pool of dentists, and its lowest averages

At the end of 2025 the Nord had 1,368 general dentists in private practice, close to the combined total of every other département in Hauts-de-France. Size comes at a price. Fees per full-time active practitioner average €298,133, −9 % on the regional figure and −1 % on the national one, ranking 70th of 101. Each of its neighbours, the Pas-de-Calais, Aisne, Oise and Somme, reports a higher average and a thinner spread of practices.

Patient numbers tell another story. A general dentist here treats about 943 different patients a year, well above the French 837, even though density (52 per 100,000 people) is roughly the national 55. Diaries are full; what is lower is the amount billed per patient. Of the average, €181,773 comes from fees at the tarif de convention (the agreed national tariff) and €116,360 from dépassements, the extra fees charged above that tariff, mostly on crowns and bridges. Practices around Lille, Valenciennes or Dunkirk are working a high-volume model rather than a prosthetics-heavy one.

A young workforce fed by Lille's dental school

Under-35s account for 34 % of general dentists, while those aged 60 or more make up just 15 %, against 19 % across France. Headcount grew from 1,271 to 1,368 over five years, a trend the Lille faculty of dentistry probably sustains. A large cohort still building up its patient list, often as associates, weighs on the mean without saying anything about an established practice. Over a decade the average still climbed, from €228,890 in 2015 to €298,133 in 2025. Mixed practice, combining private and salaried work, concerns 5 % of dentists, slightly under the national rate.

Specialists in the Nord: plenty of orthodontists, many nearing retirement

There are 96 orthodontists in private practice, 4 per 100,000 residents compared with 3 nationally. They average €777,504 in fees, −12 % against orthodontists across the region, and see 1,251 patients each. Their age profile is the reverse of general dentistry: 31 % are 60 or older, more than the French 24 %, which points to a wave of practice sales ahead.

Stomatologists, medical doctors specialising in the mouth and jaw, number 29, with 59 % of them also holding salaried posts, and average €514,017. The département ranking sets each specialty against the rest of France.

Both specialist headcounts have held steady: there were 95 orthodontists and 30 stomatologists five years earlier. Under-35s are almost absent among Nord orthodontists (3 %), so the pool of young specialists able to take over existing practices is, for now, very small.
