Moselle: a flat headcount and a generation nearing retirement

At the end of 2020 the Moselle had 563 general dentists in private practice; five years on it has 570. The workforce has barely moved, while the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin both grew. Meanwhile the age structure has tightened: 25 % of dentists are 60 or over, above the French 19 %, and under-35s make up only 24 %. For Metz, Thionville, Forbach or Sarreguemines, that implies a timetable: a sizeable share of practices will need a buyer within the next decade.

Density is 54 per 100,000 residents, almost exactly the national 55, so the imbalance shows in the age pyramid rather than in current supply. A Moselle dentist sees about 910 patients a year, more than the French 837.

Purely private practice, and an average above Grand Est

Only 2 % of Moselle general dentists combine their surgery with salaried work, against 6 % nationally. The mean of €331,715 per full-time active practitioner therefore reflects people working full weeks in their own practice. It runs +10 % on France and +6 % on Grand Est, ranking 41st of 101; the denser Meurthe-et-Moselle next door is clearly lower. Of that total, €176,789 is billed at the tarif de convention (the agreed national tariff) and €154,926 as dépassements, extra fees above it. The figure rose from €264,662 in 2015 to €331,715 in 2025, with most of the gain after 2019.

Orthodontics in the Moselle runs against the trend

Where general dentistry is ageing, orthodontics is renewing itself. Of 32 private orthodontists, 16 % are under 35, a high share in a specialty where young practitioners are usually scarce. Their patient lists are long, 1,797 a year each against 1,166 in France, and average fees of €965,818 rank 15th of 70 published départements, +30 % on the national orthodontist mean. Extra fees make up most of it (€600,669), standard for this specialty. The département ranking places the Moselle against the rest of France for each specialty.

Orthodontic headcount is stable (34 at the end of 2020) and density, 3 per 100,000 people, matches France's. Stomatology has lost practitioners, from 7 to 4, too few for a published average. On the general dentistry side, 545 of the 570 practitioners meet the criteria for the average (under 65, active all year, within the national agreement); women make up 44 %. The Moselle borders both Luxembourg and Germany, but these figures cover only fees billed in French private practice under the Assurance Maladie, the national health insurance fund.
