Bas-Rhin: Grand Est's densest dental market

With 74 private general dentists per 100,000 residents, the Bas-Rhin is one of the best-served départements in France, well ahead of the national 55 and of every neighbour in Grand Est. Strasbourg, home to a faculty of dentistry, and its surrounding metropolitan area account for much of the 873 practitioners. Plentiful supply means narrower patient lists: 778 different patients per dentist a year, below the French 837.

Fees follow suit. The average per full-time active practitioner is €295,398, −2 % against France and −5 % against Grand Est, ranking 72nd of 101. The less crowded Haut-Rhin next door posts a higher figure, as does the Moselle; only the Marne and Meurthe-et-Moselle, both also university towns for dentistry, come in lower within the region. Tariff-rate fees account for €167,541 and dépassements, the extra fees charged above the agreed tariff, for €127,857.

A largely female profession, often with a salaried second job

Women now form the majority of private general dentists here (50 %). More striking still, 12 % combine their surgery with a salaried post, more than twice the national 6 %, plausibly linked to Strasbourg's teaching hospital activity. A full-time practice compared with the département mean is therefore being measured against a group in which some people spend part of the week away from their private patients.

The age profile is close to average: 29 % under 35 and 20 % aged 60 or over (19 % nationally). Numbers rose from 825 to 873 in five years, and the mean went from €252,242 in 2015 to €295,398 in 2025, a change of +17 % across the decade. Strasbourg sits on the German border, yet the figures count French private practice only.

Orthodontics in the Bas-Rhin: fewer specialists, a sharp rise in fees

There are 53 private orthodontists, 5 per 100,000 people against 3 for France, down from 60 five years ago. Over the same span their average fees jumped from €589,454 in 2019 to €827,820 in 2025, a change of +40 %, and now sit +12 % on the national specialty mean. Mixed practice is widespread here as well: 36 % of orthodontists also hold salaried work. The orthodontist page has the specialty breakdown.

Each Bas-Rhin orthodontist follows 1,403 patients a year, more than the French 1,166, and 25 % are 60 or over, in line with the national specialty. Private stomatology is shrinking: 6 practitioners against 9 five years earlier, 50 % of them in mixed practice, too few for an average to be published.
