Ille-et-Vilaine: young Rennes graduates and a below-par average

Ille-et-Vilaine is home to the largest pool of general dentists in Brittany, 664 in private practice at the end of 2025, up from 584 five years earlier (+14 %). Much of that growth comes out of the Rennes dental school. Under-35s make up 31 % of the profession, while those aged 60 and over account for just 13 %, well short of the 19 % seen across France. In other words, few retirements are on the horizon and the competitive pressure comes from newcomers rather than from practices changing hands.

A young workforce weighs on the published figure. Average fees per full-time active practitioner (under 65, conventionné, the full year) come to €285,091: −6 % against France and −2 % against Brittany, placing the département at 82 of 101. Associates still building their list and practices in their first years all sit inside that number. What stands out is the patient base: 973 different patients per dentist each year, far more than the national 837. Lots of people come through the door, but the amount billed per head is modest.

How fees break down, and the hospital factor

Fees at the agreed tariff average €165,554, while dépassements (the extra fees billed above the convention tariff, mostly on crowns, bridges and implants) add €119,537. That is 42 % of the total, lower than the 46 % national share. A practice that looks behind its peers here is more often explained by its treatment mix than by its patient count.

Mixed practice, private work combined with a salaried post, involves 6 % of general dentists, the highest rate in Brittany and a touch above the French 6 %; a university hospital nearby probably plays a part. Since 2015 the département average has risen by +32 %, which shows how far the benchmark has shifted in a decade.

Orthodontics: plenty of specialists, solid figures

There are 44 orthodontists in private practice, or 3.8 per 100,000 residents against 3.0 nationally. Density has not dragged their average down: €873,167, +18 % on the national orthodontist figure, rank 24 of 70, with 1,468 patients each and 21 % also holding a salaried role. Further west, Finistère shows the opposite picture, with far fewer specialists. The orthodontist page sets out the national benchmarks.

Orthodontic headcount actually edged down, from 47 to 44 over five years, while the average climbed steeply from €625,519 in 2015. The specialty is younger here than in most places, with 16 % of orthodontists aged 60 or over against 24 % nationally. Among general dentists, women now make up 54 % of the profession, ahead of the French figure of 48 %.
