Finistère: private practice almost without exception
At the western tip of Brittany, the 547 general dentists in private practice hardly ever hold a salaried job on the side: 0.2 % do so, against 6 % across France. That matters when you read the local average. In many départements a low figure partly reflects dentists splitting the week with a hospital or health centre. In Finistère the chair-side week is almost entirely private, so the average of €292,350 per full-time active practitioner is a fairly clean picture of what a typical practice bills.
That figure is −3 % against the national average and level with Brittany as a whole (+0 %), ranking the département 74 of 101. Density stands at 58 dentists per 100,000 people, slightly above the French 55, and each practice treats 866 different patients a year against 837 nationally.
Prosthetics carry nearly half of billing
What sets Finistère apart is the shape of its fees. Treatment at the agreed tariff averages €150,378, and dépassements, the fees charged above the convention rate (mainly prosthetic work), add €141,972. Those extra fees make up 49 % of the total compared with 46 % in France, the highest share among Brittany's four départements. A practice built mostly on fillings, scaling and prevention will therefore sit below the local mean without seeing fewer patients. The general dentist benchmark lets you set your own split.
The Brest dental school trains locally, and it shows: 31 % of general dentists are under 35, while 16 % are 60 or older, below the national 19 %. Headcount went from 508 to 547 in five years, slower growth than in Ille-et-Vilaine.
A thin orthodontic offer
Only 14 orthodontists work privately here, down from 17 at the end of 2020: 1.5 per 100,000 people against 3.0 for France. Their average fees of €482,649 are −35 % on the national specialty figure, rank 68 of 70, and each sees 910 patients against 1,166 nationwide.
Taking the longer view, the general dentist average went from €228,660 in 2015 to €292,350, a change of +28 %, while orthodontists started the decade at €385,693. The orthodontic group is now largely female, at 71 %, and its rate of mixed practice is 0 % against 14 % nationally. Compared with the Côtes-d'Armor, which has fewer general dentists per head and a higher average, Finistère offers a more crowded but very private-sector market.
