Seine-Maritime: a strong specialist layer

The specialists are what set Seine-Maritime apart. There are 22 stomatologists in private practice, doctors trained in oral and maxillofacial care, which works out at 1.74 per 100,000 residents against 0.99 nationally, one of the highest ratios in France. They average €696,895 in fees, +32 % on the national figure for the discipline (rank 6 of 25), and each sees 1,904 patients a year. For a general dentist in Rouen or Le Havre, that means a denser network of oral surgery referrals than in most places, which may affect how much surgery stays in the practice.

Orthodontics follows the same upward line. The 23 orthodontists bill an average of €1,172,639, +58 % against the French specialty mean and rank 5 of 70, with 1,686 patients each; 22 % also work in a salaried post. None is under 35, and their number has slipped slightly since the end of 2020 (26).

General dentistry: ahead of France, behind Normandy

With 500 general dentists in private practice, the département has the largest workforce in Normandy. Their average of €339,550 per full-time active practitioner is +12 % on the French figure yet −4 % on the regional one, rank 34 of 101; the less densely served Eure, Orne and Manche do better. Density is still well below the national level, 40 per 100,000 people against 55, and each practice sees 1,019 different patients a year compared with 837 for France.

One factor lowers the average without saying anything about profitability: mixed practice, private work alongside a salaried job, which involves 6 % of general dentists, slightly above the French 6 % and well above neighbouring Calvados. Dépassements, the fees billed above the convention tariff, average €155,049, or 46 % of the total, right on the national ratio (46 %). The lead over France therefore comes as much from work at the agreed tariff, €184,501, as from prosthetics.

A generation due to hand over

Dentists aged 60 and over make up 18 % of the profession, near the national 19 %, and under-35s 26 %. Headcount grew +7 % over five years. In an under-served area, plenty of patient lists will change hands; the département ranking places each specialty in context.

Over ten years the general dentist average moved from €283,648 to €339,550, and the stomatologist figure from €388,486 to €696,895, the steeper climb of the two. Stomatology remains mostly male here, with women at 27 %, and 18 % of stomatologists combine private and salaried work. For a general practice, those numbers describe the referral landscape as much as a competitor set.
