Réunion: a fee base built on reimbursed care
The make-up of dental fees on Réunion, the French island département in the Indian Ocean, is unlike that of any mainland département. Out of average fees of €295,143 per full-time active general dentist, €225,536 are billed at the agreed national tariff and only €69,607 come from dépassements, the extra fees charged above that tariff, mainly on prosthetics. That is 24 % of the total, a much smaller share than elsewhere. A practice in Saint-Denis, Saint-Pierre or Saint-Paul therefore leans far more on standard reimbursed procedures and less on free-fee treatment plans.
The total itself is close to the national figure, −2 %, ranking 73rd of 101. Each dentist sees 825 different patients a year, much like the French 837. For an island practice, the useful comparison is less the total than the split between tariff work and free fees, which national averages blur together.
A fast-growing profession on the island
General dentists in private practice went from 490 at the end of 2020 to 597 at the end of 2025, a rise of +22 % in five years that ranks among the fastest in France. Density reaches 66 per 100,000 people, above the national 55. The newcomers show in the age pyramid: 34 % are under 35, against 30 % nationally, while 19 % are 60 or older, close to the national 19 %.
Fees moved in two stages. From 2015 to 2019 the average barely shifted, from €255,310 to €260,262, before climbing to €295,143 in 2025. Over the full decade the increase comes to +16 %, against +26 % for France as a whole, which fits the low weight of extra fees. Men are still the majority, with women at 43 %, and mixed practice combining private and salaried work does not show up (0 %).
Orthodontics: an ageing specialty
The island's 23 private orthodontists average €598,814, −19 % on the national orthodontist figure, ranked 55th of 70. That number has stood still for a decade (€609,328 in 2015). The most striking point is age: 44 % of orthodontists are 60 or over, far above the French 24 %. A large part of the specialty's capacity will reach retirement age in the coming years, on an island where replacements cannot simply come from a neighbouring département. The orthodontist page gives the specialty's national benchmarks.
