Hérault has more orthodontists per head than anywhere else in France
No département matches Hérault for orthodontic supply. Its 82 specialists in dentofacial orthopaedics (ODF, the French orthodontic qualification) give a density of 6.5 per 100,000 residents, +117 % against the French 3.0. Competition of that intensity is visible in the averages: €513,101 in fees per full-time active orthodontist, −31 % relative to the national reference, at position 63 of 70 among départements with published data. Each specialist treats 1,019 patients, compared with 1,166 nationally.
The gap lies mainly in dépassements, the share of treatment billed above the reimbursement base. These average €301,734 here against €496,218 for France, while the part billed at the agreed tariff, €211,367, stands much closer to the national €245,972. Freely priced treatment is where practices around Montpellier appear to compete. The specialty has still grown, from €366,108 in 2015 to €513,101 in 2025.
General dentistry: fast headcount growth, lower average fees
Hérault now has 929 general dentists in private practice, up from 803 five years ago (+16 %). Density reaches 73 per 100,000, +33 % on the French level, and average fees come to €263,985, −13 % against France, ranking 93 of 101. Within Occitanie only Haute-Garonne sits lower, while less crowded neighbours such as Gard and Aude report noticeably higher means.
The profession renews quickly. 33 % of general dentists are under 35 and 17 % are 60 or over, below the national 19 %. Montpellier's dental school feeds part of that intake. Mixed practice, combining private and salaried work, is close to non-existent at 0.3 % (France: 5.5 %), so the average owes little to hospital sessions and a great deal to recently opened surgeries still building a patient base. Each dentist sees 736 different patients a year, −12 % against the French figure. Women make up 48 % of the profession, roughly the national share of 48 %, and the average itself has moved from €198,240 in 2015 to today's level, a change of +33 %.
A small but well-placed stomatology segment
Stomatologists, medical doctors specialising in the mouth and jaw, number only 11 in private practice, down from 17 at the end of 2020. Their published average of €496,523 has risen sharply since 2019 (€246,292) and stands −6 % against France. With so few practitioners, a single arrival or retirement can shift the figure, so it is best read as an order of magnitude. For a group combining general dentistry and orthodontics, specialty-by-specialty benchmarks say more than one blended number; the orthodontist page sets out how.
